Motorola Edge 40: A Powerful Smartphone with Cutting-Edge Features

In India, the Motorola Edge 40 is the first smartphone in the new Edge series to be released. It has premium hardware and is priced very competitively in the upper mid-range segment. The Motorola Edge 40 is dubbed a "flagship killer," and at Rs. 29,999, it offers many best-in-class features. Is the Edge 40 authentic? While our review is being written, here are our initial thoughts on the phone.

When it comes to the retail box, Motorola is taking an environmentally friendly approach. Thankfully, it is limited to the packaging materials, which include plastic-free wrappers, a recyclable box cover, and soy-ink for the printed text. A charger and a USB Type-C cable are included in the box. With the Edge 40, the company has also included a transparent hard case, some documents, and the SIM eject tool.

Moving on to the phone itself, the Motorola Edge 40 is available in two colours. The colour we have is Nebula Green, and it has a vegan leather back panel. There is also an Eclipse Black model with a vegan leather back and a Lunar Blue model with a PMMA acrylic finish, which is essentially plastic but has a frosted, glass-like appearance.

The Motorola Edge 40 is 7.58mm thick and weighs 171g. It's worth noting that the blue model with the plastic back is slightly slimmer and lighter. The metal frame adds a premium touch to the Edge 40 and contributes to its good in-hand feel. Unlike most phones, the Motorola Edge 40 has a curved frame and back panel, allowing it to rest comfortably in your palm.

The phone is also IP68 rated and claims to be the world's slimmest 5G smartphone to receive official water and dust resistance certification. Notably, it is also the most affordable smartphone in India with an IP68 rating at the moment.

The Motorola Edge 40 has a 6.55-inch pOLED display with a refresh rate of 144Hz on the front. The top of the curved-edge screen has a hole-punch cutout for a 32-megapixel front camera. The full-HD+ display is HDR10+ certified and claims to have a peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits.

On the back of the Motorola Edge 40, there are two cameras. It has a 50-megapixel primary camera with the widest aperture in the segment (f/1.47). In theory, it should aid in capturing more light while maintaining a fast shutter speed. There is also a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera with autofocus that can be used to capture macro images. Furthermore, the Edge 40's rear camera setup can capture portrait mode images at 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm focal lengths. In the full review, we'll see how well these features actually work.

A MediaTek Dimensity 8020 SoC based on a 6nm fabrication process powers the device. In India, the device comes with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It also comes with a large 4,400mAh battery that supports 68W TurboPower fast charging out of the box. Furthermore, the Edge 40 supports 15W wireless charging.

The Motorola Edge 40 is powered by the Android 13-based MyUX skin. It provides a near-stock Android experience with some additional customisation and personalisation features. There are also some interesting productivity, security, and connectivity features, such as ThinkShield, Ready For, and more, which we will discuss in the full review, which will be published soon on Gadgets 360.
