Predictions for the PlayStation Showcase:
Opinion | With a focus on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 games, here's what we want and expect from the May 24 event.
Sony's latest PlayStation Showcase is almost here, with an hour-long runtime and a heavy emphasis on PS5 and PSVR 2 games. Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 24, at 1pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm GMT, we can expect to see some of the biggest-hitters, including Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and possibly Final Fantasy 16, which now has a June 22 release date. We can expect new projects from PlayStation-owned studios, and if we're lucky, something completely unexpected.
The E3 2023 schedule is so close we can almost touch it, and while E3 as we once knew it is no longer in existence, we're still in queue for a slew of presentations via Starfield Direct, the Xbox Games Showcase, and Ubisoft Forward, as well as other digital showcases via the Future Games Show and Summer Game Fest. The PlayStation Showcase, on the other hand, is Sony's time to shine; here's what we expect to see during the hour-long event.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2 is currently the most anticipated upcoming PS5 game, so it's difficult to imagine the superhero action-RPG not swinging by during the PlayStation Showcase. Despite being unveiled at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase and landing on lists of the most exciting upcoming Marvel games and new games for 2023, we haven't seen much of Spidey's latest adventure since. Earlier this year, rumours suggested a September release date, but Sony later clarified that it is still on track to arrive in 2023.

If you've read our PSVR 2 review, you'll know it's fantastic - even if PlayStation should have made more of a fuss about PSVR 2 demos at launch. The best PSVR2 games cover a wide range of genres and preferences, but one notable omission from the launch lineup was Superhot. The wonderful time-bending shooter from Superhot Team that moved effortlessly into the virtual reality space during the original PSVR's life cycle. The aptly-named Superhot VR more than earned its spot on our best VR games list, and with Sony already indicating that more PSVR2 games are on the way, Superhot VR making the jump to the latest iteration of its virtual reality hardware feels like a good fit and a great shout.
After being acquired by PlayStation near the end of 2021, we learned a few months later that Firesprite was working on a horror game in Unreal Engine 5. Things have been relatively quiet for the developer who brought us The Persistence in 2018, which is why we believe we will see more at this PlayStation Showcase. Herman Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, told GamesRadar+ shortly after Sony's takeover a few years ago: "[Firesprite has] that drive to grow, to try new things, and now we get an opportunity to work on some really interesting games, exclusive games within PlayStation Studios, that I can't talk about today in detail, but I'm very, very excited about."
The PlayStation Showcase isn't short on visually appealing and thought-provoking indie games. Kena: Bridge of Spirits comes to mind, and I'd love to see more of Little Devil Inside, especially given how many times it's been delayed. Sifu is another game that stands out in my mind as a unique and beautiful game that completely caught me off guard, and I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I'd like to see more from Playdead's follow-up to Inside and Limbo. These indie gems are frequently unpredictable, but when they land, they're frequently as memorable and noteworthy as their big-budget, AAA counterparts
Because, well, why not? Bloodborne 2 will/could/should be included in the PlayStation Showcase. Maybe we'll get a full-fledged Dino Crisis remake, or maybe someone will realise that a Soul Reaver Remake is the best way to reintroduce the series to the PS5. And, while I refuse to rule out any of those hazy possibilities, we might see something more concrete from God of War head honcho Cory Barlog's sci-fi game; something from the many Silent Hill games in the works; something from Slitterhead; or maybe something more on Marvel's Wolverine, just to make sure we remember it exists.
